Alex Bump, a 21-year-old left winger from Prior Lake, Minnesota, is a promising prospect for the Flyers, drafted in the fifth round (133rd overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft. He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Flyers in April 2025, to which Bump joined the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms on an amateur tryout for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, “That’s my goal since I’ have signed, try to make the opening night roster,” Bump said at Flyers’ Developmental Camp Wednesday. “I think I’m totally capable of doing that, I just have to put my best foot forward at camp.”

During his time with the Phantoms, Bump made an immediate impact, scoring his first professional goal in his second game and recording three points (one goal, two assists) in just four periods. Bump’s breakout 2024-25 sophomore season at Western Michigan University saw him lead the Broncos to their first NCAA National Championship, earning him the NCHC Forward of the Year award with 23 goals and 24 assists for 47 points in 42 games. His high shot volume (248 shots), playmaking, and physicality (6’2, 194 pounds) have drawn praise, with Flyers staff noting his potential as a top-six forward if he adds more muscle, “I’m just trying to stay in my lane,” Bump said. “I’ll let him decide whether or not he wants me. I’ll try to put my best foot forward to make him choose me.”

At the Flyers’ 2025 Development Camp, Bump showcased his scoring knack and confidence, aiming to compete for an NHL roster spot in the 2025-26 season, especially with Tyson Foerster’s injury creating opportunities.

His style, blending a heavy, accurate shot, deceptive skating, and a 200-foot game, has drawn comparisons to a “Cutter Gauthier type” but with added physicality. Scouts highlight his ability to control shifts, create chances, and compete defensively, though he needs to improve puck protection against stronger AHL/NHL competition.

The Flyers’ organization is notably high on Bump, with some calling him a potential draft steal. He’s expected to push for a roster spot at training camp, “”I do think he’s going to have a great shot at making it out of Camp,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong continues, “He was getting knocked off pucks in the Hershey series, That’s something that we’ve talked about. We have addressed that with him. A lot of that’s just the gym work, getting a little bit stronger. You look at his frame, he gets up to about 200, 205 pounds, I don’t think too many guys are going to be knocking him off the puck.”
