The definition of a leader as defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary is, “Something that leads.” Gotta say, Sean Couturier was that for the Flyers on and off the ice. On the ice, Coots tallied 22 goals, and 37 assists for a total of 59 points.he was the last one off the ice and practices more often than not, and became vocal in the locker room. Leaders lead by example, and that’s what Coots does.

Down in the muck against the Boston Bruins, Couturier pots a huge goal to pull within two of the Bruins at 5-3. That’s the moment the flood gates opened for the orange and black, as Coots then placed the team on his back. The Flyers went on to win that game 6-5, in what would be forever known as the whiff (Brad Marchand over skated the puck at center ice).

Coots holds himself to a high standard, and also holds himself accountable when need be. Accountability was a strong word that was used this season for the Flyers. Couturier is no stranger to holding himself accountable, and that rubs off on his teammates, as well.

Whatever line Coots is on he just seems to wreak havoc on his opponents on a nightly basis. The difference of this season, as compared to other seasons, is Couturier is finally evolving into the leader this young team has craved for the past few seasons, and after last night’s performance that should cement his name in stone for a possible Selke Trophy (Best Defensive Forward) this season.

The best part about Coots is his leadership, and that was shown today when a question was asked about Nolan Patrick from reporters at Flyers Training Camp, “I think every player coming into the league is put in different situations, whether you’re a first round pick or fifth, sixth, seventh round pick, you’ve been invited. You go through some up and downs as a young player, I think it’s a part of learning, part of adapting to the NHL. Most players when you come out of junior and you’re drafted you’re a dominant offensive player and then you come to the NHL, it’s the best of the best. You have to adapt and find your game, but it’s no different for any player.”

Couturier continues, “Some guys it takes a little longer than others. I think it’s important to be strong mentally and know yourself. Trust your skills. You know what you can do. I think Nolan still has a really bright future. He’s a really skilled player. We can’t wait to have him back with us.”

It’s a shame what has transpired for the young Nolan Patrick. Patrick has gone through so much this season, mentally and physically with being diagnosed with a Migraine Disorder, and he wants to play more than anything. The good thing is that his teammates have his back, and Patrick will return better and stronger than ever before next season.

  1. I agree with everything that Sean has said. Nolan has a bright future with the flyers and fans and teammates alike can’t wait to see him back on the ice. I think someday Coots is going to have that C on hos uniform.
