Noah Powell, 19, is a fifth round selection at number 148 for the Flyers. He recently played in the USHL with the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Powell lead his team in goals, and he also led the entire league in scoring with 43 goals and 74 points in 61 games.
Powell is a Power Forward, and that was made evident at Flyers’ Developmental Camp this past week. He’s very strong on the puck, and he had a great Developmental Camp. Powell is hearing impaired, but no one would know it if you didn’t know him. He wears hearing aids and he is good at lip reading he said to us last Tuesday. Powell needed no assistance whatsoever with answering questions from the media, “I read lips pretty well, and I do wear hearing aids. Sometimes it’s hard to wear them just because there is a lot of sounds on the ice and it can echo and ring. I feel like I’ve gotten better over the years in terms of really listening and hearing what the coaches are saying,” Powell said Tuesday on 7-2-24.
He continues, “Sometimes it’s just kind of double checking with the coaches or one of the guys around and really kind of paying attention. I’ve really got to focus in and make sure I’m hearing what they’re saying so I can go out and execute.”
Powell is a big power forward at 6’2, 201 pounds. At Developmental Camp, he was so tough to get the puck from, and that was made evident in the 5-on-5 scrimmage this past Saturday night. He plays with lots of grit, he’s good at board battling. With that, he’s good at cycling the puck down low winning those battles if need be. Powell just has a knack for the net, but he also possesses a nice wrist shot, as well. He grew a lot this week, he learned a lot and he stood out to Brent Flahr, “First off he’s got a great attitude and he’s very strong. Real determined kid, top end speed.”

The biggest knock for Powell was his skating ability, but that wasn’t a problem at Developmental Camp. There were many skating drills that the Flyers coaching staff implemented, and a lot of the Developmental Camp included skating. Powell’s skating was definitely not a drawback last week, as he heads to Ohio State now since Developmental Camp has concluded, “Kind of wish it was a little longer. Kind of close with some of them,” Powell says of Flyers Developmental Camp. He specifically mentioned Cody Croal, Lee Parks, Oliver Bonk, and Denver Barkey as those that helped him and he got along well with.
This young man just continues to smile and it’s infectious. If he continues to hone in on his skills at Ohio State, he could very well turn out to be something special. He knows it’s going to be hard to replicate his 2023-24 season, but Powell knows confidence is a biggie for success, “I feel like I came in things were a little slower than I expected. There was a little spot in the lineup due to injuries and suspensions. And I kind of ran with it from there. Just built up on my confidence as things started to go better and better for me.”
