The Flyers put themselves in a big hole once again on Wednesday night against the Washington Capitals. Through the first half of the game it appeared they couldn’t do anything right, and the puck puck found its way in the back of the net on four separate occasions. Whatever they did, whether it was right or wrong, the puck just seemed to find the back of the neck against them

Before you could blink it was 4-0. Three goals of which were not Ivan Fedotov’s fault. As a matter of fact, when the Flyers trailed 4-0 he somehow made a miraculous save, and it left me wondering where has that been!!! That was one of those saves that you could mark down, if the Flyers clawed their way back in it, “He made a couple of big saves there to keep us in it,” Flyers’ Head Coach John Tortorella said following the game.

With this being a fragile Flyers bunch, a 4-0 hole sure felt like 8-0. They just look flat, lethargic, and uninterested through the first half of the game on Wednesday night. It was absolutely downright embarrassing, until Fedotov made that miraculous save, and another player stepped up to the plate…Nick Seeler. Seeler stood up for Travis Konecny, following what he thought was a cheap hit. The game wasn’t at the Wells Fargo Center, so he didn’t have to throw up his arms and excitement to get the crowd going, but nonetheless, that obviously paid huge dividends to this club and woke them up.

Within less than a minute, Travis Konecny pots a Power Play goal. A few minutes later the Flyers pot another. They head to the locker room finally for once feeling good about themselves, and they got a goal nearly midway through the third period. Matvei Michkov potted his third career NHL goal to pull the Flyers within one at 4-3. For once, it felt like the Flyers were in control, and they proved to be a resilient bunch like last season. Down 4-0 they could have checked out, or just wanted to go home. Not this bunch.

Unfortunately a bad line change cost the orange and black. Egor Zamula should have touched the puck as he was heading off on a line change, thus committing a too many men on the ice penalty. However, Zamula did not and it left Washington with a two-on-one rush with the empty net. The Capitals won 6-3, as they scored another empty net goal.

The orange and black proved to be a resilient bunch, although the comeback fell short. They will take anything positive right now, especially on this six-game losing streak. Hopefully, this gets them going on Saturday afternoon against the Minnesota Wild, “We showed some life. We started forechecking, it’s a step in the right direction.”
