The Phantoms former AHL MVP Gerry Mayhew is pulling his weight having seven goals already on the early season for a dormant Lehigh Valley Phantoms offense. Especially when Max Willman is up with the Flyers taking away one of the Phantoms other best point producers. On top of that Morgan Frost should get called up soon if he keeps his play up or injuries keep stacking up. That is why it is key to have good AHL veterans on your team and the Phantoms have a very good one in Gerry Mayhew. They of course, also added Jon Gillies in net, and Nick Lappin a forward, both veterans to PTO’s on Tuesday.
Mayhew in his 2019-20 MVP season scored 39 goals and had 61 points in 49 games. Yes, only 49 games. So it is safe to say he is one of the league’s top veteran scorers. Difference now is he was on a very good performing Iowa Wild team compared to an underperforming Phantoms team this season. Mayhew also is clutch as 10 of his 39 goals in his MVP season were game-winners. This season he is one of the Phantoms top forward performers and definitely the best pure put the puck in the net guy on the team. Mayhew’s speed and lethal shot make him a threat each time down the ice for the Phantoms. He too though is a solid passer having his career-high 33 apples in 2018-19.
In a season where it has been bleak for us Phantoms lovers, Mayhew has been a very good bright spot showing why he was an MVP and being a very good leader of an offense that needs more to pick it up around him. Mayhew too was sharp last season in his last year with the Iowa Wild having 9 goals & 9 apples for 18 points in 19 games. He is a driving force of any offense even a dormant Phantoms one. He too as a undersized guy is not afraid of anyone or any area of the ice. Which if needed makes him more valuable as a insurance NHL piece.
At only 5’9 receiving all the undersized arguments against him, and going undrafted Mayhew has made one hell of a career for himself. Also, he does have some time in the NHL hence why he was signed to a two-way deal for one year. So if the Flyers continue to get banged up he could see a call-up at some point as well. Especially if that is before Allison is ready to return at the NHL level or in general. Wade Allison did return to practice which is great to see. All in all Gerry Mayhew was a fantastic pickup for the Phantoms and is a nice depth piece to have as insurance for the Flyers at a bottom six-level likely in the NHL. Very nicely done by Mayhew who for sure has to have his sights set on getting back to the big show.
