Malkin/Crosby/Kane are all Cup winners and MVP’s. Giroux isn’t anywhere near them in terms of individual talent.

He accumulated those numbers due to length of career. He’s won nothing, has led the Flyers into winning nothing and has never won anything individually.

The last time he was chosen for Team Canada, they put him on the 4th line for one game, then made him a healthy scratch for the rest of the tournament.

Claude Giroux is top 5 in points over the last 10 years. In that same category are players like Patrick Kane, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin and look at the teams around those players. It took Ovi a long time to win. Everything that has gone right with the flyers has everything to do with G and everything that goes wrong has nothing to do with G. Unfortunately I think the pause in 19-20 stunted a lot of development in Travis Konecny, Travis Sanhiem and even to some extent Ivan Provorov.

The unfortunate thing is the Ellis injury and his durability. Jvr and Hayes are perfect players but their salaries are horrible! Jvr will score 10 in 20 which is a 40 goal pace but then he’ll also score 0 in 20. Boy if he could just be more consistent. Hayes is a perfect locker room guy and 3rd Center but his salary is horrible.

I say retool if we are out of the playoffs trade Giroux for a haul and have him resign and get his cup with Philly!

Look into possibly trading Tk and Sanhiem for the right pieces. A goal scorer and a top 4 defenseman.

Sorry but I am not rioting if we trade Provorov. Especially if we can sucker another team into giving us a haul for him.

I guess you missed what he did when he was healthy playing for the Phantoms. Also, in his brief time with the Flyers, we were a much better defense with him than without him.

Just look at the current D now.

Sam Morin “monster shut down defenseman”…when did that happen ? He has done NOTHING but rehab injuries since he got drafted !! Lol

Have to trade: Braun, Yandle, Thompson, JVR, Giroux.

Look into value in trade: Sanheim, Konekny, Laughton, Hayes, McEwen, Brown, Frost, Lindblom, Coots. Risto.

Can’t trade or we riot: Farabee, Hart, Provorov, York,

The next coach should be a ball breaker. A stickler, mean mugger that has a solid system in place that the players then execute. With the new core being the untouchables, the team has to move on from the past poor play. I believe G is a great player and all time Flyer. It’s just that C on his chest that the team follows. He’s laid back in his leadership, hence the team being what it is the last 8 years. A new captain will bring a new vibe. Hopefully one that wins and competes for 60+ minutes every night. A defence first approach coupled with Hart and a healthy Ellis/Ivan pair can be a good start to a new era. In a perfect world, Hayes would be a 3C and Coots a 2C. Aquire a true 1C and they both slide back to where they should be ideally. Farabee is becoming a 1W as Atkinson ages, sliding him naturally back to ideal. Hope the new players we aquire in these trades become some what of a team around the new core. The 8.5M G took up is replaced by another top paid to perform player, JVRs 7M hopefully gone, the wings can be replaced with 2W level talent and fill in drafted players wherever we can. Allison, Sammu, Forester should all be close to playing real minutes and so should York and Zamula on the Blue line. There are things to be done and Chucky 2 trades needs to get a new nickname. Chucky 8 trades. Anyway that’s just some thoughts on my Flyers. The state of them is, sadly, not so good. But I am optimistic we can turn it around and compete in 2022-23…. Great article Jamey. Past mistakes have cost us dearly. They drafted Provorov thinking he was going to be a cornerstone defenseman. He didn’t work out like that. They drafted Ghost. He didn’t work out. They drafted Couturier thinking they got some great talent that somehow slipped to them in the draft. Well, he is what he is and it’s nothing special.

Thr biggest mistake though, was thinking they could build a team around Claude Giroux. He is probably the biggest “superstar” failure in Philadelphia sports history.

He has won exactly NOTHING in his career. Either individually or for the team. Yet, incredibly, he gets compared to Bill Barber, Eric Lindros, and Bobby Clarke.

If I’m the Flyers, I do everything I can to get Sam Morin healthy and build the defense around a 6’7″ monster shut down defenseman, Carter Hart and go from there. The Devils won 3 Cups doing exactly that with Ken Daneyko and Martin Brodeur.

I also would send out feelers for trade options for real offensive talent. Meaning I would see what teams were willing to give for Provorov, Couturier, Giroux, and everyone who has trade value. Go with a youth movement. Acquire draft picks.

Organizationally, I would hire more and better scouts. Especially in areas that we’re thin in. For example, Europe and Russia.

Start over. Because we really don’t have any other choice at this point.
