<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale filed for salary arbitration on Sunday, July 5, 2026, ahead of the NHL deadline.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is standard for restricted free agents (RFA&#8217;s) when contract talks stall. They are two of 15 players league-wide who filed, including notable names like Jason Robertson (Dallas Stars).</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Key Details:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>What filing means: </strong>It triggers a potential arbitration hearing (July 20–August 1 window) where an independent arbitrator decides a one-year salary based on comparable players. Both sides present cases, and the decision is binding. </li>

<li><strong>Most common outcome:</strong> Teams and players almost always reach a settlement before a hearing. Flyers GM Danny Briere has expressed confidence in getting deals done. </li>

<li><strong>Offer sheet protection: </strong>Filing makes them ineligible for offer sheets from other teams, which benefits the Flyers by removing that risk. </li>
</ul>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Player Context:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Trevor Zegras (forward, coming off a strong season with the Flyers after prior time with Anaheim) is a key offensive piece. His previous deal had a $5.75M AAV; expectations are for a significant raise. </li>

<li>Jamie Drysdale (defenseman) had a prior $2.3M AAV contract. He&#8217;s arbitration-eligible and performed well recently. </li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Flyers, who ended a playoff drought, are prioritizing re-signing these young core players. Negotiations will likely continue, with arbitration serving as leverage rather than a likely endpoint. Both contracts could be on hold, pending the outcome of the Leo Carlsson offer sheet, as well. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s a bold, high-upside move for the Flyers to offer sheet Leo Carlsson, that could accelerate their contention timeline, though it&#8217;s risky due to the massive compensation involved.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" data-attachment-id="33729" data-permalink="https://flyersnittygritty.com/podcast-alert-is-oliver-ekman-larsson-the-best-option-for-the-flyers/image-1-4/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,576" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=640%2C360&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=632.4%2C356&amp;ssl=1" alt="Photo Credit: Our very own Rob Windfelder " class="wp-image-33729" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=310%2C174&amp;ssl=1 310w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=60%2C34&amp;ssl=1 60w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Details of the Offer Sheet</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>5 years, $90 million total, with an $18M AAV (making Carlsson temporarily the NHL&#8217;s highest-paid player). </li>

<li>Heavily front-loaded with massive signing bonuses (e.g., ~$20M in Year 1 bonuses on a low base salary) and an NMC in Year 5. </li>

<li>If Anaheim does not match (they have 7 days), Philadelphia gets Carlsson but must surrender four first-round picks (one in each of the next four drafts) as compensation. </li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is rare in the modern NHL (last major comparable was the 2012 Shea Weber offer sheet).</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why It&#8217;s Potentially Good for Philadelphia</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Talent upgrade: </strong>Carlsson (21, 2023 2nd-overall pick) is already a strong young center with size, skill, and production (29 goals in 70 games last season). Pairing him with players like Matvei Michkov and other young pieces gives the Flyers a legitimate young core. nytimes.com</li>

<li><strong>Cap flexibility</strong>: The front-loaded structure (low base salaries, big bonuses) helps the Flyers stay under the cap short-term while they build. They reportedly still project ~$11M in space even with this hit. puckpedia.com</li>

<li><strong>Aggressive signal</strong>: Flyers&#8217; General Manager Danny Briere is showing willingness to go all-in and change the franchise&#8217;s trajectory instead of another slow rebuild. It pressures the Ducks and could reset the market for young stars. </li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s a &#8220;win-now&#8221; (or at least &#8220;win-soon&#8221;) swing that fits a team with young talent and cap space. If Carlsson pans out as a franchise center, it&#8217;s a steal. If not, the lost picks will hurt for years. Many see it as exciting for Philly fans tired of mediocrity, but it&#8217;s far from a guaranteed success. The Ducks are widely expected to match to keep their young star.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This has shaken up the NHL offseason significantly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Flyers&#8217; aggressive 5-year, $90 million offer sheet ($18M AAV) to Anaheim Ducks RFA center Leo Carlsson (signed July 3, 2026) was a bold, high-risk move aimed at landing a young franchise talent to accelerate their contention window.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Carlsson, the No. 2 overall pick in 2023, had 29 goals and 67 points in 70 games last season, helping the Ducks reach the playoffs. At just 21, he projects as a potential star center with size, skill, and two-way ability.</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Key Reasons It Made Sense for the Flyers</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Urgent need for a top-line center</strong>: The Flyers have built a young, competitive core (including Matvei Michkov and Travis Konecny) and made the playoffs recently. They lack a true No. 1 center to drive the offense and pair with their wingers. Carlsson would slot in immediately as that centerpiece, elevating the forward group significantly. </li>

<li>Rare chance to acquire elite young talent outside the draft: High-end young centers rarely become available via trade. Offer sheets are uncommon in the NHL, and this was one of the best realistic shots for the Flyers to add such a player. Flyers&#8217; General Manager Daniel Briere had been eyeing this approach for months. </li>

<li><strong>Cap flexibility and rising league cap: </strong>The Flyers had built cap space, and the NHL salary cap is increasing. The deal&#8217;s structure (heavily front-loaded with ~$85M in bonuses, e.g., massive Year 1 signing bonus) maximizes pressure on Anaheim while fitting Philadelphia&#8217;s books short-term. </li>

<li><strong>Draft capital depth: </strong>The Flyers have accumulated extra picks (including Toronto&#8217;s). Giving up four first-rounders over the next four years hurts, but it&#8217;s a calculated price for a potential superstar entering his prime. They view this as a &#8220;big leap&#8221; opportunity. </li>

<li><strong>Aggressive &#8220;Broad Street&#8221; identity:</strong> This fits the Flyers&#8217; history of bold moves under Briere, forcing the Ducks (who reportedly offered ~$12-13M AAV) into a tough spot and shaking up the league. </li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="265" data-attachment-id="32320" data-permalink="https://flyersnittygritty.com/summit-logo-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/summit-logo.jpg?fit=768%2C265&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="768,265" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="summit-logo" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/summit-logo.jpg?fit=640%2C221&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i1.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/summit-logo.jpg?resize=632.4%2C218&amp;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-32320" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/summit-logo.jpg?w=768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/summit-logo.jpg?resize=300%2C104&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/summit-logo.jpg?resize=310%2C107&amp;ssl=1 310w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/summit-logo.jpg?resize=60%2C21&amp;ssl=1 60w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>215-752-0560 WWW.SUMMITPUBLICADJUSTERS.COM</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Risks and Context</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The compensation (four first-round picks for an AAV over ~$11.9M) is steep, and $18M makes Carlsson the league&#8217;s highest-paid player (topping upcoming deals like Kaprizov&#8217;s $17M). Critics call it an overpay relative to his current production, and the Flyers aren&#8217;t guaranteed contenders yet.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now the Ducks have until July 10 to match (they&#8217;ve signaled intent to keep him). If they don&#8217;t match, the Flyers get a young star at the cost of future assets.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overall, it was a logical gamble for a team with contention aspirations, strong prospect depth, and a clear positional need—using a rare mechanism to force a high-upside addition. Whether it pays off depends on Carlsson&#8217;s development and the Ducks&#8217; decision.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Flyers have tendered a 5-year offer sheet to Anaheim Ducks RFA center Leo Carlsson worth an AAV of $18 million (total $90 million).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" data-attachment-id="33729" data-permalink="https://flyersnittygritty.com/podcast-alert-is-oliver-ekman-larsson-the-best-option-for-the-flyers/image-1-4/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,576" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=640%2C360&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=632.4%2C356&amp;ssl=1" alt="Photo Credit: Our very own Rob Windfelder " class="wp-image-33729" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=310%2C174&amp;ssl=1 310w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=60%2C34&amp;ssl=1 60w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anaheim now has seven days to match the offer sheet under NHL CBA rules (Section 10.3). If they do not match, the Flyers would acquire Carlsson, and the Ducks would receive four first-round picks from Philadelphia (one each in 2027, 2028, 2029, and 2030) as compensation. This is the highest tier of offer sheet compensation, which applies to contracts with an AAV of roughly $11.94 million or more.</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Background and Context</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Carlsson&#8217;s situation</strong>: The 21-year-old Swedish center (drafted 2nd overall in 2023) is a restricted free agent after his entry-level contract expired. In 2025-26, he had a strong season with 29 goals and 67 points in 70 games, plus playoff production helping the Ducks reach the second round. He&#8217;s viewed as a franchise centerpiece. </li>

<li><strong>Why an offer sheet?</strong> Carlsson was eligible due to the structure/timing of his prior deal. The Flyers, under GM Danny Briere, have a clear need at top-line center and are aggressively pursuing talent. This bold move (the largest AAV in the offer) signals intent to shake up the market, even if many expected the Ducks to retain him. </li>

<li><strong>Ducks&#8217; position</strong>: Prior reports (as recent as July 2) indicated Anaheim was prepared to match any offer sheet on Carlsson and had preserved cap space for that purpose. Matching would tie up significant cap space but keep their young core intact. </li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a rare high-stakes offer sheet in the modern NHL (offer sheets are uncommon due to compensation and relationships between GM&#8217;Claude s). Expect significant updates in the coming days as the Ducks decide. Flyers fans are buzzing, while Ducks fans are likely confident in a match but wary of the cap implications.</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Claude Giroux</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Flyers are indeed signing Claude Giroux, per my source.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Fourth Period, David Pagnotta, was the first to report. Welcome back home to Philly Claude Giroux.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m hearing the Flyers have signed forward Nolan Foote to a one-year, two-way contract (reportedly $850K NHL / $300K AHL).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a depth signing for the Flyers. Foote, a 25-year-old left-shot winger (6&#8217;3, 200 lbs), was a first-round pick (27th overall) by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2019. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">He’s a big, physical forward with some scoring touch in the AHL (career highs around 18-20 goals and solid point production in recent seasons), but he hasn’t stuck full-time in the NHL yet. He’ll likely start with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Flyers’ AHL affiliate) and provide organizational depth, with a chance to compete for NHL call-ups.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This fits the Flyers’ pattern of adding affordable, experienced depth players on short-term deals during free agency.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dan Vladar is indeed one of the classiest guys in the NHL. In yesterday&#8217;s interview with the press <strong>he said,</strong> &#8220;I want to say thank you to Sam Ersson. I think he can be a starting goalie in this league.&#8221;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" data-attachment-id="33729" data-permalink="https://flyersnittygritty.com/podcast-alert-is-oliver-ekman-larsson-the-best-option-for-the-flyers/image-1-4/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,576" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=640%2C360&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=632.4%2C356&amp;ssl=1" alt="Photo Credit: Our very own Rob Windfelder " class="wp-image-33729" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=310%2C174&amp;ssl=1 310w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=60%2C34&amp;ssl=1 60w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vladar recently commented on the two new young Czech goalies the Flyers drafted (Martin Psohlavec and Marek Sklenicka). He congratulated them, offered to help with any questions, and invited them over for lunch or barbecue (BBQ) this summer at his place.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I congratulated them. Told them that they were going to be around. I would help them with any questions. Could have lunch, barbecue,&#8221; <strong>Vladar said of the two newest Czech goalies with the Flyers. </strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s a perfect example of the welcoming veteran vibe he&#8217;s known for—whether it was hugging ice techs, praising teammates like Sam Ersson, or now mentoring the next wave of Czech netminders in the Flyers organization. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Czech Goaltending has been strong lately (Vladar, Dostal, Vejmelka, Dobes, etc.), and having a guy like Vladdy around to show the prospects the ropes (and fire up the grill) is a nice touch. Solid leadership.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the Flyers signed Claude Giroux (likely a short-term deal) he would likely give the Flyers&#8217; Power Play a meaningful boost, along with other benefits.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" data-attachment-id="33729" data-permalink="https://flyersnittygritty.com/podcast-alert-is-oliver-ekman-larsson-the-best-option-for-the-flyers/image-1-4/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,576" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=640%2C360&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=632.4%2C356&amp;ssl=1" alt="Photo Credit: Our very own Rob Windfelder " class="wp-image-33729" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=310%2C174&amp;ssl=1 310w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=60%2C34&amp;ssl=1 60w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Current Context </strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Giroux&#8217;s 2025-26 season (with Ottawa Senators): 82 GP, 14G-35A-49P, +20, strong faceoff % (~63%), and solid PP production (1G-12A on the man advantage). He&#8217;s playing a middle-six role effectively at age 38 and remains a smart, high-IQ player with elite vision and playmaking. </li>

<li>Flyers&#8217; power play in 2025-26: They finished near the bottom of the NHL at ~15.7% (32nd). It&#8217;s been a long-standing weakness. </li>
</ul>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why Giroux Would Help the Power Play</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Proven PP specialist: He&#8217;s the Flyers&#8217; all-time leader in power-play points and had 84 PP goals in his first stint with the team. Even now, he can still drop to a knee and rip shots from the half-wall or distribute effectively. </li>

<li>Faceoff and setup ability: Excellent on draws (especially offensive zone), which helps generate more PP opportunities and setups. Reports specifically note he&#8217;d address needs as a right-shot center who can win faceoffs and contribute on the man advantage. </li>

<li>Versatility and IQ: He can play center or wing, mentor younger players, and provide secondary scoring/playmaking without needing top-line minutes. His presence could stabilize special teams and give coach Rick Tocchet more lineup flexibility (alongside players like Couturier, Zegras, Cates, etc.). </li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Giroux is not the 90-100 point prime Giroux anymore, but at a reasonable cap hit (likely 1-2 years, ~$2-3M range based on his last deal), he&#8217;d be a low-risk upgrade over replacement-level options for a contending-or-near-playoff Flyers group.</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Potential Downsides</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Age (turns 39 in January) means declining speed/foot speed — he&#8217;d be a depth/middle-six piece, not a driver.</li>

<li>Nostalgia factor could create expectations or locker room questions, though many view him as a positive veteran presence. </li>

<li>The Flyers have other Centers, so he&#8217;d need to fit into a crowded Winger role, that could take faceoffs. </li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overall, a reunion makes sense if the price and term are right. Flyers fans have been buzzing about it since free agency chatter started.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tyson Foerster, a 24-year-old right winger for the Philadelphia Flyers (drafted 23rd overall in 2020), just signed an 8-year, $56.8 million extension ($7.1M AAV) starting in 2027-28.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Here are the main long-term reasons the Flyers committed to him as a core piece:</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>1. Proven Scoring Upside and Offensive Consistency</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Foerster has shown 30-goal potential with a lethal shot (one of the harder ones in his draft class) and strong net-front presence. He scored 13 goals in just 29 games in the injury-shortened 2025-26 season (0.59 G/GP pace) and has 61 goals in 195 career NHL games. </li>

<li>He projects as a reliable top-six winger who can drive offense, finish plays, and contribute on the power play. His size (6&#8217;2, 214 lbs) and puck protection help him excel in high-danger areas. </li>

<li>Long-term, this gives the Flyers a cost-controlled, high-volume shooter who can pair with playmakers for sustained offensive impact through his prime (ages 25–32 during the deal).</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>2. Strong Two-Way Play and Defensive Reliability</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Foerster is praised as a 200-foot player with good hockey IQ, defensive instincts, board battles, and puck protection. He’s trusted in all situations, including penalty killing. nhl.com</li>

<li>This versatility makes him more valuable than a pure scorer—he contributes without creating defensive liabilities, supporting the Flyers’ contention window. allphly.com</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>3. Youth, Physical Tools, and Trajectory</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>At 24, he’s entering his prime with room to grow in strength, consistency, and play-driving. He’s already developed steadily from prospect to NHL contributor.</li>

<li>Big-bodied wingers with his blend of skill, shot, and two-way game tend to age well if they stay healthy. The extension locks him in before he hits unrestricted free agency. </li>
</ul>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>4. Cap and Team-Building Value</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The deal (starting after his current bridge contract) provides long-term stability at a reasonable AAV for a top-six forward with his profile—especially compared to what he might have commanded as an RFA after a full healthy season.</li>

<li>It fits the Flyers’ strategy of extending young core pieces (e.g., alongside players like Travis Konecny) to build around a competitive roster for years. GM Danny Briere highlighted him as a “key part of our long-term future” and a “foundation” player. </li>
</ul>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Potential Risks</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Injuries have been an issue (he missed significant time in 2025-26 with an upper-body injury and had a limited playoff showing), so durability is the main question mark for an 8-year deal.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The bet is on his talent, work ethic, and two-way floor outweighing that.Overall, the extension is a bet on Foerster becoming a long-term 25–35 goal, all-situations winger who anchors the Flyers’ forward group—offering scoring punch, physicality, and reliability without cap overpay in his peak years. It signals confidence in his development and role in Philadelphia’s rebuild-to-contention plan.</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Foerster does have a limited no trade clause:</strong></p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Foerster has the following trade protection, for his brand new 8-year contract extension:</strong></p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Years 3-6: 10 Team No Trade List Year 7: 6 Team No Trade List<br>Year 8: 4 Team No Trade List</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Flyers have had a glaring, long-standing weakness on the Power Play. It&#8217;s been one of the worst in the NHL for several seasons running, and it carried over into 2025-26 despite roster changes and a new coaching staff.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" data-attachment-id="33729" data-permalink="https://flyersnittygritty.com/podcast-alert-is-oliver-ekman-larsson-the-best-option-for-the-flyers/image-1-4/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,576" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?fit=640%2C360&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=632.4%2C356&amp;ssl=1" alt="Photo Credit: Our very own Rob Windfelder " class="wp-image-33729" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=310%2C174&amp;ssl=1 310w, https://i0.wp.com/flyersnittygritty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/image-1.png?resize=60%2C34&amp;ssl=1 60w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>2025-26 Performance</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The Flyers finished with a Power Play percentage around 15.7% (37 goals on 235 opportunities), ranking near the bottom of the league (32nd or close to it). </li>

<li>Still well below the league average, while team searched fir consistency. </li>

<li>In the playoffs, it was a major issue (e.g., 0-for-5 in a key loss to the Hurricanes, with short-handed goals against). </li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This has been a multi-year problem. Over the last several seasons combined, the Flyers have had the league&#8217;s worst (or near-worst) PP efficiency.</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Key Factors and Personnel</strong></p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Talent on paper — The roster includes skilled offensive players who should help:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Travis Konecny (team leader in points)</li>

<li>Trevor Zegras (strong playmaker)</li>

<li>Matvei Michkov</li>

<li>Owen Tippett</li>

<li>Defensemen like Cam York and others who have PP upside. </li>
</ul>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why it fails </strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Common complaints include stale/dated schemes, too much perimeter play and static setups, slow zone entries, lack of net-front presence or quick puck movement, and poor shot quality/volume. It often looks predictable and easy to defend.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The orange and black also need more talent, and this offseason was one way to obtain it. They need a viable 1C that can move the puck, and win key draws, coupled with a Power Play Quarterback on the back end. Unfortunately, It appears the Flyers will get neither of them. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">New Head Coach Rick Tocchet (and assistants like Jaroslav Svejkovsky) were brought in partly to fix this, drawing from his Vancouver success, but results were mixed in year one.</p>

<p class="has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Outlook</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Flyers made the playoffs in 2025-26 (43-27-12 record) but the PP remains a clear hole that caps their ceiling. Offseason moves, better integration of young talent, and tactical tweaks (more speed, net presence, creativity) will be priorities. It&#8217;s a fixable issue with the right adjustments—many teams have turned it around quickly—but history shows it&#8217;s been stubborn in Philly.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Look for more if the same old, bad Power Play numbers for the 2026-27 season. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All will play for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, all but may Auston-Reece. Reece signed an NHL deal with the Flyers, so they would have to use waivers to move him to Lehigh, when that time arises. </p>
