As the Philadelphia Flyers headed back from Montreal to Philadelphia with a 5-4 loss to the Canadiens. The Flyers had one thing on their minds, which was to limit the goals/chances against a struggling Flames team. It didn’t turn out so well for Carter Hart as he kept them in it as long as he could, but unfortunately he succombed to defeat. Good news moving forward is the Flyers Penalty Killing Unit did well last night.

The Flyers Penalty Killing Unit came into the night struggling, but they are also missing two key parts to the unit: Cam Atkinson and Sean Couturier. However, they managed to kill off both Flames Power Plays, and they managed to increase their penalty killing percentage by 1.1% to 74.58%, to which they are now tied for the 25th best penalty killing unit in the NHL. They suffocated the Flames, and made it hard for them to enter the zone with the man advantage.

Calgary came out flying with two goals in the opening period by Jonathan Huberdeau and Dillion Dube. A few minutes later, the Flyers made a spectacular offensive play as Tanner Laczynski made an excellent tip-in by center ice of the goalie crease that made it a one goal game, 2-1. Kevin Hayes got the assist on his goal giving him 19 points on the season.

Tanner Laczynski potted his first career NHL goal. It’s been a long time coming, but he has played well. He just hasn’t produced at the rate that John Tortorella would like in the NHL. Tortorella knows that there’s another level to his game, so hopefully this gives Laczynski confidence to get to that level, “I feel like I’ve been just waiting for it to happen and was fortunate enough to get a good bounce there,” Laczynski said. “Also, a good play by Hayes by getting it to the net and I just put a stick on it. Obviously, I’m excited about the goal, but at this point we loss.”

In the second period, it was all Flames, as the Flames defense really stepped up their tenacity that made the Flyers unable to make any solid openings for a goal opportunity. The Flames fired up another goal three minutes into the period by Rasmus Andersson with a vicious slap-shot to the right hand side of Flyers goaltender, Carter Hart, that made the score 3-1.

The third period was no different from the first two eventually, but the Flyers made a big statement early as Joel Farabee had a great wide open opportunity, which turned into a wrist-shot goal near the center of the goalie crease a few feet from it to pull the Flyers within one at 3-2.

Less than three minutes to go in regulation, the Flames punched in another goal, which this time it was an empty net goal that made it 4-2 Flames. Two minutes later, the Flames poured another goal to take out the Flyers energy that made it 5-2 by a goal from Trevor Lewis with seconds to go in the final period.

It was so exciting to have Flyers hockey back in South Philadelphia after a devastating season that last season was. The young guys on the Flyers really went to work against the Boston Bruins at the Wells Fargo Center, as John Tortorella viewed from up top. Ian Laperrière was the bench boss yesterday.

With 1:42 in to the opening period, Flyers’ forward Morgan Frost made a one timer shot by the left side of the puck drop circle and the puck spun away from the Bruins goalie that made left wing, Noah Cates have the ability to make a great wrist shot power play goal that gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

It was really quiet offensively for the Flyers in the second period where they couldn’t handle a good chance to score, and vice versa Boston made it very difficult for them to have open opportunities to score.

Although, the Flyers weren’t thriving in the second period, they definitely made it up with a Jackson Cates tip-in shot from defenseman Egor Zamula. Zamula slapped the puck near mid ice and it was deflected by Jackson on the left side of the net, which slipped by for a goal that made the score 2-1 Flyers five minutes in to the final period.

The Cates brother’s had an awesome performance in South Philadelphia on Saturday evening.

Flyers goaltender, Felix Sandström followed the Cates’ path to greatness as he did an incredible job in the net. Sandström played for thirty plus minutes and stopped all seventeen shots he faced. The Flyers gave Sandström some time off during the game, and brought in AHL standout from last season, Troy Grosenick. Grosenick gave up one goal which was the game tying goal by Bruins’ Center, Jakub Lauko with seven minutes to go in the game.

The Flyers won 2-1

The Philadelphia Flyers only won one of four games on the road before having to meet with the Pittsburgh Penguins who were on a nine game winning streak coming into the game against the Flyers. Coming into this game, the Flyers had six players on COVID Protocol and were significantly short-handed with the loss of Sean Couturier. Unfortunately, the Flyers were playing the Penguins who are the NHL’s hottest team.

With 12:21 left in the opening period, Penguins Kris Letang made a vicious pass to Bryan Rust to the right side of Carter Hart who wristed a wicked shot that zipped past Hart’s right hip to make it a 1-0 game. 14 minutes later, the Penguins kept rolling as they got another great opportunity on a four on four advantage to make it 2-0. Bryan Rust pounced on the rebound of an Evan Rodrigues shot and shot it low where the Flyers goaltender couldn’t make a save.

The Penguins continued to play cohesively offensively as they scored again on a 4-on-4 situation. Kris Letang gave a good feed to Jake Guentzel across the ice to make the score 3-0. The goal was reviewed because the Flyers thought it wasn’t a goal, but Carter Hart’s glove was over the line with the puck in it and rightfully the goal was granted.

With 11 minutes left in the second period, Cam Atkinson unleashed a gorgeous slap shot on a 2-on-1 that went right past Penguins goaltender Tristan Jerry (assisted by Joel Farabee) that made the score 3-1. The Flyers dominated the second period.

“We played the right way and played for each other. We found a way to get one goal there but I don’t think we did a good job in front of Hartsy (Carter Hart) here. We kind of let him out to dry the entire night. There’s only so much you can do to keep us in these games. We have to find a way to not only help him out but help ourselves out with playing harder and creating more opportunities in front of their goalie.” – Cam Atkinson

Just 8 minutes into the third period, the Penguins spread out their lead to 4-1 on a breakaway goal by Evan Rodrigues which was set up by a beautiful pass by Kasperi Kapanen.

With 9 minutes to go in the final period, Tristan Jarry made a spectacular save on a Flyer chance and Jake Guentzel flipped a shot over Carter Hart’s left shoulder on the ensuing rush. The score was 5-1 Penguins.

A minute later, the Penguins Brian Boyle was able to finish a shorthanded 3 on 2 rush for his second goal of the year and the Penguins led 6-1.

The Flyers finally got their second goal of the night, this time, with 7 minutes to go in the final period. Oskar Lindblom skated towards the right side of the Penguins goaltender to hit the back of the net to make the final score 6-2 Penguins.

Unfortunately, the Flyers were unlucky to be so short-handed and had to run into the Penguins buzzsaw. Feeling bad for Carter Hart is fine as there was nothing he could do minus Giroux and Couturier, not to mention Travis Sanheim and Ivan Provorov being in Covid Protocol. The Flyers are now 13-14-6 on the season.

After a devastating loss in overtime to a strong Washington Capitals team this past Saturday (May 8), it was a different game for the Flyers as they hosted the New Jersey Devils for their season finale game at the Wells Fargo Center Monday evening. 

The Flyers shined offensively after they fell behind 2-0 in the first period. The Flyers then scored four unanswered goals to win 4-2 in front of their proud faithful. Before the game Brian Elliott was honored by the Flyers organization for playing in his 500th career NHL game this past Friday night. He was given a watch and a commemorative stick for his honor.

Just three minutes in to the opening period, the Devils got on board as Nico Hishcier made a beautiful backhand pass across the ice to Pavel Zacha, to which Zacha wristed a shot to the right side of the goal tp give the Devils the lead at 1-0. 

Two minutes later, the Devils got another goal when Janne Kuokkanen slid in a wrist shot near the left face off circle and past Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott to put the Devils up 2-0. 

Joel Farabee got things going for the Flyers when he scored 13:44 into the first period to cut the Devils’ lead in half. 

Midway through the second period the Flyers tied the game up at two on a goal by Sean Couturier that eluded Devils netminder Scott Wedgewood. This was by far the best assist I have personally ever seen from Claude Giroux. Giroux made it look easy as he made a kick-pass with his skate and Giroux nailed it in on the left hand side of the goal. 

12:25 into the third period, Claude Giroux passed to Sean Couturier who set up James van Riemsdyk for a tip in power play goal to help the Flyers take the lead, 3-2.  

With 3:52 left, Flyers jumped on the Devils by two goals, as Joel Farabee got a tip in from a shot by Kevin Hayes to make the score 4-2, which happened to be his 20th goal of the season. The best is yet to come for Farabee, as he had a stellar Sophomore season with leading the team in goals (20), and tallied 38 points, “I think going into the season I never really expected it to happen (20 goals), but I think, personally, I’m proud of myself,” Joel Farabee said following the game. “I put a lot of work in this summer working on my game. It feels good that that paid off.”

The Flyers finish 25-23-8 on the season as they get the 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils in their final game of the 2021 season, “Obviously again, by no means did we live up to expectations this year,” James van Riemsdyk said postgame. “It was an up and down season, with probably more down than up obviously with where we’re at right now. I don’t know. Again, you want to try to go in and have some sort of positive note going into the offseason, obviously it’s a bitter taste where we didn’t make the playoffs and get a chance to accomplish more of the goals that we had. You still got to process the season and stuff like that. We’ll probably do that over these next couple of days and go from there to try to figure everything out.”

“I plan to play,” Brian Elliott said as he plans to return for another season in the NHL next season. “I feel like I have a lot left to give. I feel like I’m playing really good hockey and health wise I had another really good year where I didn’t really see the training room once. It’s nice to feel that way. Whatever happens, happens. This league, whenever you don’t make the playoffs there’s going to be changes through your lineup or staff or whatever. You just have to roll with the punches. I’d love to stay here, obviously and keep searching for that cup. That’s kind of out of my control and I just try to let my play kind of speak for itself. Having a pretty good record this year for the team record, I’m happier than maybe if it was the other way around.”

It was a very intense forty minutes because the Flyers and Capitals were battling it out to see who would get on board first on Saturday (May 8) evening in Washington D.C at Capital One Arena. The Flyers played amazing on the defensive side, as well as, their goaltender Alex Lyon where he came up clutch saving some big time plays, limiting the front line of the Capitals offense from scoring. He made a huge 38 saves on 40 shots faced, “He played the game extremely well,” Flyers Head Coach Alain Vigneault said postgame.

They battled and battled and at last Conor Sheary for Washington carried the Capitals to victory in overtime to get the victory. In the last period of play with 3:42 gone, it didn’t take long as the Flyers got on the board as Scott Laughton made an excellent wrist shot that went upstairs passing Capitals goaltender Craig Anderson’s left shoulder to put the Flyers in the drivers seat with a 1-0 lead.

In the third period both sides had the same mentality as the first two periods where they really attacked each other on both ends of the ice limiting scoring opportunities, but it was a Goaltenders duel apparently.

With less than 40 seconds left in regulation, the Capitals capitalized with a goal from Lars Eller with a one-timer slap shot to tie the game at one, thus ending Lyon’s bid for his first career NHL shutout.

Both teams entered overtime with chances at both ends of the ice. Lyon came up big giving his team a chance to steal the victory. However, Conor Sheary shot a puck through the wickets of Lyon, and the puck slowly crossed the blue line thus ending the game for a Capitals 2-1 victory. With the loss the Flyers are now 24-23-8 on the season with one game to go.

“I felt like I had a strong game,” Lyon said postgame. “I play the game to win. Just super frustrating. As good as you play you let a goal up with 40 seconds left, then in overtime.”

Extra Notes:

The Flyers have not won back to back games since March 29, 2021, and they will have to wait until next season too do such. Alex Lyon finishes the season with the highest Save percentage for Flyers Goaltenders at a rate of .893.

After getting shutdown by the Pittsburgh Penguins team this past Tuesday 7-3. The Flyers came out with energy on Friday night, and  skated past the Washington Capitals 4-2.

Just 1:44 into the opening period, the Flyers got off to a wonderful start as Joel Farabee backhanded a shot in traffic into the goal to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead, an assist was by Kevin Hayes.

With less than four minutes left in the period, the Capitals tied the game on a goal from Daniel Sprong where he ripped a snap shot from the right side and the puck blazed through the open space past Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott to make it a 1-1 game. 

Early in the second period, the motivated Flyers team went up 2-1 as Wade Allison made a terrific snap shot that blasted past Washington goalie Vitek Vance.

Late in the second period, Wade Allison scored with a sweet backhand shot that put Philadelphia up, 3-1. It was Allison’s second goal of the night and put the Flyers in control of the game.

With less than two minutes left in the second period, the Capitals got within one goal when Brendon Dillon shot the puck to the net and the puck deflected  off T.J Oshie’s skate and into the goal.

It was a quiet last period offensively where both teams played great defense and each goaltender shut the other team down.

Sean Couturier shut the door on the Capitals with an empty net goal to make the final score 4-2 Flyers. It just do happens that Brian Elliott registered an assist on the goal, which happened to be his 10th career NHL point.

Wade Allison had one hell of a game last night. The puck was exploding off his stick, and quite frankly he looked awesome. He gives the Flyers hope with goal scoring in the future.

Cam York had a great NHL debut and boy did he garner some ice time with 20:59 in ice time. He also registered one shot on net, blocked one shot, was a good skater, and was terrific with breakouts and clean zone exits. York seemed calm, cool, and composed.

The Penguins Marcus Pettersson led off the game with a goal less than two minutes into the game, and that set the tone for a Penguins win over the Flyers. Unfortunately, the Penguins rebounded from a dispirited effort the night before to win this game 7-3.

Just 1:44 in to the first period, the Penguins got on board first as Marcus Pettersson made a great move as he back-handed a shot through Brian Elliott’s legs to help the Penguins take a 1-0 lead.

The Penguins got off to a sharp start in the second period as Jake Guentzel wristed a shot that blasted past Elliott for a power play goal to to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead. Later in the second period, the Penguins best player Sidney Crosby pushed a shot past Brian Elliot to put the Penguins up 3-0.

Just 8:21 in to the period, the Flyers finally got a goal as Justin Braun tallied his first goal of the season. He wristed a shot near the right face off circle in the back of the net to cut the Penguin lead to 3-1. Sean Couturier made it a one goal game with a snap shot that deflected off a skate and made it’s way through Tristan Jarry’s legs to make it 3-2 Penguins right before the period ended.

Can we talk about a huge hit by Shayne Gostisbehere for a moment. He is playing for a job next season, and that is quite evident with his play. Ghost also has a hearing later today for a cross check late in the game to former Flyer Mark Friedman. But my gosh what a hit!!!

Halfway through the last period, the Penguins took advantage of a Claude Giroux turnover to make it a two goal lead, as Jason Zucker lofted a soft wrist shot past Brian Elliott for the 4-2 lead. Travis Konecny threw a shot to the net with less than 10 minutes left that deflected off the Penguins’ Marino’s skate and into the net to cut the lead to one again at 4-3.

Less than two minutes later, Sidney Crosby whipped a shot from one knee that went upstairs past Elliott to to make it a two goal lead for the Penguins, 5-3. It appeared the life was sucked out of the Flyers with that goal as the Penguins locked things up as they got an empty net goal by Mark Friedman to put the Penguins up 6-3.

A minute later the Penguins scored again on a power play goal by John Marino make the final score 7-3. The Flyers are now 23-23-7 on the season.

Following the game Elliott started choking up as he talked about his family and his 500th career NHL game, “I mean to be able to play 500 games in this league is an accomplishment I’m really proud of,” Elliott said. “I tried to soak it in and just enjoy the moment. It’s not ideal the way it turned out. It’s kind of how the season was going a little bit. I’m really proud of the fact to be able to reach that milestone as a goalie. Really happy that my wife and kids were there watching. Really joyful for me.”

Elliott continued, “Nothing has come really that easy for me. You just have to work hard. Ever since getting drafted second to last overall, it really puts a burr in your saddle and you just want to prove to everybody you can do it. I’ve had a lot of help through the year. Starting with parents, family, my brother and then teammates, coaches, everybody has a role of getting you to a point where you can play 500 games in the NHL. I’m so thankful for everybody along the way. Wife and kids just make you keep pushing. Know that you’re playing for something bigger than yourself. I just want to thank everybody.”

It was an unusual performance by the Flyers where they tallied a total of four goals through the first two periods to take a 4-0 lead en route to a 7-2 victory on Monday (May 3) evening in South Philadelphia against a solid Pittsburgh Penguins squad. The Flyers offense was dominant from the start of the game on pride night, as the Flyers were energized in this tilt.

Flyers Kevin Hayes got things started with just under six minutes into the first period, with a tip in goal assisted by Jakob Voracek and Joel Farabee. Then, a few minutes later the Flyers secured another goal on a power play on a good snap shot by Shayne Gostisbehere that made the score 2-0. The Flyers weren’t finished with scoring in the first period as Flyers Captain Claude Giroux  ripped one through Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith to give the Flyers a field goal lead, 3-0 at the end of the period. Oh yea let’s not forget one of the best saves you will ever see, and this one is courtesy of Alex Lyon:

Just 7:50 in to the second period, the Flyers continued to shine on the offensive side when Wade Allison got one to go in the net from a great stretch pass down the ice by Shayne Gostisbehere to make the score 4-0.

The Penguins finally got a score with three minutes in to the third period as Kris Letang got a good handle on the puck as he shot it and it deflected off Sidney Crosby’s stick and inched it’s way in to the net for the goal to make the score 4-1. 

8:24 into the final stanza, the Penguins cut the Flyers lead to two as John Marino made a solid shot that was deflected by Jason Zucker to make the score 4-2 Flyers. 

Less than nine minutes left in the third period, Flyers Jakub Voracek fought off traffic near the wall as he delivered the puck to Joel Farabee who made a great move to get the goal to make it 5-2. He moved into 10th place All-Time in Flyers history with 602 points.

With 2:21 left, Flyers Captain Claude Giroux capitalized on the empty net to make the score 6-2.

Once everyone thought the Flyers were done scoring for the night…think again. With one minute left, the Flyers scored their seventh goal of the night as a sniper (Haha just kidding) Robert Hägg wristed a shot into the net to make the final score 7-2 Flyers.

Great performance all over and hats off to Flyers goaltender Alex Lyon on a tremendous performance against a really solid Pittsburgh Penguins team. The Flyers are now 23-22-7 on the season with four games to go in the regular season. 

“Obviously last year was different circumstances, given the fact that I was playing on a consistent basis with Lehigh there, kind of found a rhythm,” Alex Lyon said after the game. “I think tonight was really the first game that I felt like a hockey player. I felt good. It takes a little bit of time to find that rhythm and find that groove. I felt tonight I found a really good recipe for success. Even more than the win, I’m just personally happy. You just go through some negative thoughts like ‘am I ever going to win a game again?’ and stuff like that. It’s really nice. I’ve been just trying to trust myself and trust my game. Tonight I felt like everything really came together. Just happy to move forward with that in mind.”

I know it wasn’t what the Flyers fans wanted, but the Devils were able to break their 10 game winless streak by holding on to a 6-4 win in a back and forth game.

It was a very quiet first period as both teams were battling it out trying to get on board first. With one minute left to go in the first period, the Devils moved the puck well and Nico Hischier snapped a shot that that was initially blocked by Flyers Robert Hägg before Hischier finished it and put it through past Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott on the right hand side of the net to make the score 1-0. 

The Devils kept the momentum going early in the second period as they secured a power play goal on a wrist shot by a Pavel Zacha to make the score 2-0 Devils.

Late in the period, Miles Wood ripped a long distance shot that zipped right through Brian Elliott to make the score 3-0. Devils.

Ten seconds after Wood’s goal, the Flyers finally got a goal when Oskar Lindblom wristed a shot (assisted by Jackson Cates and Nolan Patrick) that trickled through Devils goaltender Blackwood’s legs to make the score 3-1. This was also Cate’s first NHL point.

Just 2:24 in to the third period, the Flyers got within one goal as Philippe Myers snapped a shot through MacKenzie Blackwood’s right armpit to make the score 3-2 Devils. That was Myers’ first goal of the year.

A minute later, Flyers Claude Giroux made a great move right in front of Blackwood and some how he got the puck to go in to the right side of the net to tie things up at three a piece in the third period. Giroux is just on fire here lately as he now has three goals in his last two games played.

Midway through the third period the Devils Connor Carrick blasted another wrist shot by Brian Elliott and into the left corner of the net for a goal to make it a 4-3 Devil lead.

Four minutes later, the Flyers came back to tie the game after a wrist shot by then Sean Couturier and it Devils goalie MacKenzie Blackwood. Later last night the goal was officially awarded to Travis Sanheim with Sean Couturier getting an assist. 11 seconds later, Yegor Sharangovich jumped on a loose puck and poked it past Brian Elliott to give the Devils a one goal lead again at 5-4.

The Flyers pulled their goalie with more than two minutes left in the third period and put a lot of pressure on the Devils, but could not convert any of their chances. Eventually, the Devils broke out of the defensive zone and scored an empty net goal by Mikhail Maltsev to make the final score 6-4. 

Devils get the win, 6-4. The Flyers fall to a record of 22-20-7.

Egor Zamula (From audio I received from Zack Hill) said before the game: “I feel great. Probably the best day of my life to my parents, and to me. I’m ready to play, and win this game.” Well, Egor Zamula logged 19:19 of ice time, was a +1, blocked 1 shot, registered three shots on net, and had one takeaway. Zamula was decisive and fast. Clearly he can play, and he will work on wrapping players up in the corner. Very good debut nonetheless.

“It was the best feeling in the world,” Zamula said following the game. “Try working hard every shift, and faster. I want to play at best level.”

NEXT UP: The Flyers are back at it on Thursday, April 29 in Newark, NJ to take on the Devils again for their third game of their five game series between them. Puck drop is at 7 PM EST and can be seen on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Heading in to Sunday night’s game at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, the Flyers handled their game plan pretty well. It all went down in the third period where Flyers Captain Claude Giroux potted two much needed clutch goals to force overtime. Kevin Hayes garnered the Flyers a win in round six of the shootout. Flyers goalie Brian Elliott was tremendous in the overtime and shootout, as the Flyers went on to win 4-3 in a shootout.

Just 4:56 in to the opening period, the New Jersey Devils Nathan Bastian made a great across the ice pass to Michael McLeod who tipped the puck in the goal while going full force to make the score 1-0 Devils.

Midway through the first period, the Flyers tied the game up with a Philippe Myers snap shot that was deflected by Sean Couturier and made the redirect to make it 1-1. 

Early into the second period, the Devils got another one to go, and this time Nathan Bastian made an excellent unbalanced pass in traffic to Miles Wood, where Wood tipped it in the goal on the left hand side of the crease to make it 2-1 Devils.

Midway through the final stanza, the Devils did a great job controlling the puck when Jesper Bratt made a center ice pass to Pavel Zacha for the snap shot tip in that made it a two goal lead, 3-1.

With just 1:26 left, James van Riemsdyk made an incredible pass to Giroux for a good set up for Giroux to nail it in to make it a one goal deficit for the Flyers, 3-2.

After an intense three periods and overtime, the Flyers passed the Devils in a stellar shootout performance as they secured the win 4-3. “He’s one of the most competitive human beings out there,” Sean Couturier said of Claude Giroux. “Anything he does, he wants to win. Before the game Head Coach Alain Vigneault said that Ghost would miss at least 7-10 days with an MCL sprain. This is a shame for a player that has battled through so much adversity throughout his entire career with injuries. Ghost was playing well before this injury as he tallied eight goals, and assists on the season.
