A second-round option the Flyers could look at is Kingston Frontenacs left-winger, Martin Chromiak.

Born on August 20th, 2002 in Ilava, Slovakia, Chromiak is on the younger side of the draft. Standing at 6’0, 181 lbs, the right-handed winger played many seasons in Slovakian leagues. At the age of 16, he played in Slovakia’s U20 league, with HK Dukla Trencin, where he was a top point producer, scoring 46 points(22 goals, 24 assists) in 39 games.

Chromiak has also produced well at the international level. He averaged over a point-per-game with both Slovakia’s U18 and U20 teams. He also played in the 2018/19 as well as the 2019/20 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and was a top point-getter throughout both tournaments. This season he did not make the 2020 World Junior roster, which did not help his draft stock.

After a rough 32 games with HK Dukla Trencin of the Slovakian league, Chromiak transferred over to the Ontario Hockey League to play with the Kingston Frontenacs. Chromiak was selected second overall in the CHL Import Draft last year.

Since coming to the Frontenacs, all Chromiak did was impress. In 28 games he put up 33 points(11 goals, 22 assists). He played on a line with top prospect for the 2022 NHL Draft, Shane Wright, and fellow 2020 Draft eligible, Zayde Wisdom. The line shortly became the Frontenacs best line on their struggling team. The only thing critzited from his transfer is that his scoring rate only grew from playing with Shane Wright. Although, Wright’s production also grew upon the arrival of Chromiak. Now, Chromiak is listed as a second or third-round pick, and potentially a late first-rounder.

Scouting Report

The first thing noted when watching Chromiak is his strong hockey IQ. From reading his teammates movements on the ice and having a knack for the soft spots, he does a great job at giving them an opportunity for a goal. His hands and vision allow him to make plays at full speed, especially in tight areas. He is also a goal-scorer who possesses a quick release shot. Chromiak can create space for himself to fire a quick wrist shot, snapshot, or slap shot, but he can also drive the net fast, which leads to many net-front opportunities. As a high-end forechecker, he plays a solid power-play game and can be used as a setup man. His skating is decent but there is still room for improvement. Chromiak’s edgework is strong, which helps him go hard in the dirty areas and pick up loose pucks in the corners. One thing he does need to work on is his stride, which will improve his overall top-end speed. Defense is another area Chromiak will have to improve. His consistency on the defensive end can be an issue. Despite this, he does a good job at backchecking and supporting his defenseman.

Why he would be a good fit for the Flyers’

Chromiak projects as a potential top-six winger who can be used on special teams units. He has a lot of tools that would benefit the Flyers in the future. He can make plays, but most importantly, score goals in multiple different ways. With the Flyers looking for a natural goal-scorer, Chromiak would be a perfect fit.
